For years, pension savers had to keep an eye on the Lifetime Allowance - a cap on the total pension wealth you could build up before extra tax charges applied. That allowance was abolished in April 2024, and a new set of rules took its place. If you have not looked at your pensions since, here is what changed and why it still matters.
What was abolished, and what replaced it
For most people, the important headline is simple: you can still usually take up to 25% of your pension as a tax-free lump sum, but there is now an overall cash cap of around £268,275 unless you hold a protection.
